Man suffers serious burns in fuel explosion

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter has airlifted a man to a Sydney hospital after a fuel explosion at a rural property.

The 40-year-old man was working on an outboard motor at a property at Arding, west of Armidale, when it exploded just after midday today.

Paramedics and the helicopter's critical care team treated the man for serious burns to his upper body and face and stabilised him before he was flown to the Royal North Shore Hospital burns unit in Sydney, where he will get specialist treatment.

Paramadics confirmed he was conscious throughout the ordeal.

It is understood the man was in a serious but stable condition when he was airlifted.
