Police injured in altercation with teen

Two police officers were injured during an altercation with a young person in Tamworth yesterday.

At 8am on Monday, police were called to Armidale Road, East Tamworth, following a concern for welfare and on arrival, officers attached to Oxley Police District spoke with a 17-year-old boy, who allegedly became agitated when he was told an ambulance was on its way to assess him.

The boy tried to leave the scene and allegedly pushed police a number of times before he and police fell to the ground as officers attempted to restrain him.

When NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived, the boy then ran across Armidale Road, in front of oncoming traffic, with police pursuing him on foot.

The boy was eventually taken to Tamworth Hospital where he was assessed before being taken to Tamworth Police Station and issued a Future Court Attendance Notice for the offences resist officer in execution of duty, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm and assault officer in execution of duty.

He is due to appear in a children’s court on Tuesday 18 August 2020.

Two Senior Constables were injured in the melee, including one officer sustaining a fractured arm and the other suffering a strain to the back and were treated in Tamworth Hospital and are both recovering.
